The Author’s Hour
What makes a story take hold? Where do characters come from? And what really goes on behind the pages of a published book?
Join prize-winning author Jenny Knight, whose debut novel Wild Moon Rising explores friendship, desire, reinvention and the wild possibilities of midlife, in conversation with bestselling author Mary-Jane Riley, creator of the acclaimed Beattie Cavendish spy series.
Jenny’s route to becoming a novelist has been anything but conventional – she’s worked on farms, in pubs and factories, as an actor and even a roadie, before becoming an editor, mentor and prize-winning writer. Her work has appeared in Kit de Waal’s celebrated Common People anthology, and she has taught creative writing in prisons and worked on storytelling projects in Africa.
Mary-Jane spent many years as a BBC journalist and radio presenter, interviewing everyone from authors and actors to local people with a story to tell. After being encouraged by crime writer Ruth Rendell to “just write”, she went on to create four contemporary thrillers before turning to historical espionage with her Beattie Cavendish novels, a female GCHQ operative navigating the dangerous world of post-war espionage.
Expect an entertaining and revealing conversation about writing, inspiration, characters, life experience, getting published – and the stories behind the stories.
A must for anyone who loves books, writing and a good story.
