Future Development

Westacre Theatre is at an exciting stage in it’s development. After extensive public consultation, the theatre’s Trustees undertook an imaginative five year, two phase project to transform the fortunes of Westacre Theatre.

Phase 1 added to the present Studio theatre a kitchen, café, bar, foyer, loggia extension, creative arts space, gallery, meeting room and office. The setting was also enhanced by creating a new public amenity of landscaped meadowland with a nature lagoon, seating and picnic places, linked to woodland walks along the River Nar and Nar Valley Way.

However, to secure it’s long term future, Westacre Theatre must expand by adding a 150 seat theatre-in-the-round that will facilitate a greater number and range of performances and youth workshops, attract new audiences, open up new opportunities for training in and enjoyment of creative and performing arts.

The theatre’s new architects have created a light and airy structure incorporating the new auditorium, foyer & bar, workshop and accommodation for visiting artists that blends well with the Phase 1 extension. Built to high environmental standards, the south facing roof will be fitted with solar panels meeting 75% of the theatre’s electricity usage. Enthusiastically welcomed at public consultations, the building has obtained planning permission, and fundraising has started.

The provision of extensions and new buildings are only a means to an end. Westacre Theatre is actually all about people – creating new opportunities for the education, enjoyment and well-being of the whole community. We are very confident that the Phase 2 development will continue that record.
